UAE residents are preparing for Diwali on Sunday, November 8, with illuminated homes, family gatherings and a programme of outdoor celebrations across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Festival of Lights coincides with the arrival of more comfortable evenings, encouraging families to plan visits to waterfront venues, cultural attractions and places of worship.
Balconies decorated with strings of coloured lights, doorways brightened by traditional lamps and preparations for festive meals are part of the seasonal atmosphere. For expatriate households, the weekend offers opportunities to celebrate with relatives and friends while participating in public events organised across the Emirates.
Dubai’s official Festival of Lights programme began on November 2 and continues until November 12, combining cultural performances, family activities and retail promotions. The Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment has incorporated the celebrations into the emirate’s annual retail calendar, with events designed for residents and visitors from different communities.
One of the principal attractions is Noor: Festival of Lights, scheduled for November 7 and 8 at Souk Al Seef beside Dubai Creek. The free programme runs from 6pm until 11pm on both evenings, featuring processions of illuminated puppets, traditional dhol drummers, Bollywood dance and live music.
Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi is scheduled to perform on Saturday alongside Ashu Ali and Saif Hayat of The Shams. Sunday’s programme includes the band Jammers and singer-songwriter Sooraj Santhosh. The waterfront setting allows visitors to combine the performances with evening walks and dining along the creek.
Global Village will hold five days of Diwali activities from November 6 to 10. Its programme includes cultural performances, children’s activities, festive shopping and traditional food. Organisers have scheduled a display involving 600 drones for 8pm on November 8, with illuminated formations inspired by the festival above the Stunt Arena and Syria Pavilion.
A festive market organised with the India Pavilion will feature decorations, gifts, snacks and sweets. Children can participate in diya colouring, face painting and rangoli activities. Entry to the celebrations is covered by the attraction’s admission ticket, with prices starting at Dh25.
Dubai Miracle Garden will stage its Bloom and Glow Diwali Festival on November 7. A parade featuring dance and music is scheduled between 4pm and 7pm, alongside rangoli activities, lamp painting, children’s entertainment and stalls selling food and festive merchandise. Admission prices start at Dh79.
Dubai Parks and Resorts has also scheduled Diwali Dhamaka activities from November 6 to 8 at Riverland, including music, dance and street food. These events provide alternatives for families seeking outdoor entertainment beyond shopping centres and private celebrations.
Shopping destinations are participating through workshops, performances and promotional campaigns. BurJuman Mall’s Khushiyon Se Bhari Diwali programme runs until November 12, with activities including traditional musical gatherings and festive crafts. Jewellery retailers and other merchants are offering seasonal promotions as households purchase gifts and decorations.
Religious observances remain central to the occasion. Families traditionally light diyas, decorate entrances with rangoli patterns and offer prayers, particularly to Lakshmi, associated with prosperity. Many also exchange sweets and gifts and prepare special meals, maintaining customs that connect expatriate households with relatives abroad.
Abu Dhabi’s BAPS Hindu Mandir has scheduled Diwali celebrations from November 6 to 10. Visitors are required to register in advance rather than arrive without reservations. The temple is also scheduled to open on Monday, November 9, an exception to its usual Monday closure.
At the Hindu Temple in Dubai’s Jebel Ali area, worshippers are expected to gather for prayers around the main festival day. Visitors planning evening trips may need to allow additional time for queues, particularly as religious observances overlap with family outings and other celebrations.
The outdoor programme also reflects the way celebrations extend beyond individual homes. Creekside processions, garden displays and theme park performances offer shared spaces for families whose relatives may live in different neighbourhoods or emirates. For those choosing quieter arrangements, home decorations, visits to friends and evening meals remain ways to observe the festival without attending ticketed attractions or large gatherings.
Diwali falls on Sunday this year, following Dhanteras on Friday and Choti Diwali on Saturday. The festival continues with Govardhan Puja on Monday and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday. Although Diwali is not a UAE public holiday, its timing allows many residents to arrange celebrations around the weekend.
